How To Overcome A Fear Of Travel

The pandemic has brought a set of challenges that involve advanced preparation for the most basic activities like going to the supermarket, the bank, even a walk in the park. From face masks to hand sanitizers to being conscious of every surface you touch. The thought of traveling is triggering anxiety for many. Thinking about being on a plane after not traveling during the pandemic can be overwhelming. There is more preparation involved with traveling than before. Some view COVID safety measures as a political issue which creates additional fears because one can control the precautions they take however cannot control the behavior of others. Furthermore, news about the more contagious strains can add to a fear of travel.

Anxiety Disorder Statistics

 According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 40 million people suffer from an anxiety disorder every year. Some may have to travel for work or to see family, others simply want to take a vacation and recuperate from a difficult year. Regardless of the reason, the thought of stepping back on a plane again can trigger heightened anxiety for many that do not necessarily have anxiety disorders.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

 Cognitive behavioral therapy is a commonly used form of psychotherapy to address anxiety disorders. It focuses on unhealthy behaviors and thought patterns. The therapist gradually works with the patient to help them perform more and more of the activities they have been avoiding. There are various techniques including role playing, keeping a journal, and other methods that lead to practicing new skills and setting goals. Therapy can take between months to over a year depending on the individual circumstances.

Herbal options and Prescription medication

 Doctors often prescribe Xanax, Valium, or Ambien to their patients who have a fear of flying.  All of these medications have side effects and Ambien has been known to trigger sleepwalking. They also can leave you feeling tired long after you have landed. Skullcap and St John’s Wart are herbal options that can provide relief but may not work for everyone. Many doctors suggest these options as a last resort.

Hypnosis for Fear of Traveling

 Hypnosis for overcoming fears is highly effective. After being guided into hypnotic trance, the individual experiences a highly relaxed state where they are more open to shifting their perspective and letting go of their fears and anxiety. Performing guided imagery, affirmations, positive suggestions and other hypnotic techniques in which a person is more receptive to during hypnotherapy. This scientific study shows that hypnosis is effective for stress and anxiety relief. 

Past Experiences that Trigger Anxiety

 Some fears and phobias are learned based on experiences from the past. Witnessing a scared parent on a flight, can inadvertently teach a child to fear flying. A turbulent flight can also trigger a fear of flying. Hypnotherapists are able to identify the sensitizing event and reframe it unconsciously, helping to let it go. This is what makes hypnotherapy for a fear of flying different from traditional options.

 Travel has been a source of happiness for so many planning much needed vacations and family gatherings. Now people are obsessing over preparations and the thought of getting on a plane can trigger an enormous amount of fear and anxiety. There are many reasons we want to begin traveling again. Travel opens you up to new experiences, gives you memories that you will have for a lifetime and is a much needed form of recharging your batteries. Travel brings people together from different walks of life. There are different options available to overcome your fear of travel. Many are looking forward to traveling again free from anxiety and stress with a renewed sense of openness and excitement to what lies ahead.
