How to Boost Cell Phone Reception in a Basement

You need to boost your cell phone signal in the basement but aren't sure how to go about this. It sucks that your cell phone reception can be interrupted because you're in your basement, but the following guide will help.

Microcell

One step you can take is to talk to your cell phone carrier. Explain what's going on, and they might be able to accommodate your situation. Not every company can do this, but some can offer a microcell. These devices give you a signal in your basement by localizing the signal. These little devices act like microcell towers, but you need to have broadband to make this work. If you already have broadband, then this shouldn't be an issue, but if you don't, you may have to get it.

Signal Booster

The other option you have is purchasing a cell phone signal booster. This is another device that can give you cellphone reception in your basement. Sometimes, these devices are called signal amplifiers or cellphone repeaters, but don't get confused by these alternative names. What this does is detect a weak signal and rebroadcasts that signal to make it stronger. It's like the device heard a whisper and is trying to scream what it heard. This is a good solution if your cell phone company can't offer you a good solution.

Charged Up Trick

When you are in your basement and your smartphone is having trouble getting a good signal, your cell phone power plays a bigger part. Low power may hurt your phone's ability to hold a strong signal. Normally, the power doesn't really affect your phone's ability to maintain a good signal because the signal is strong but not now. Keep your phone plugged up if you're going to be in your basement. This, along with the other suggestions, could make a difference.

Remove the Cover

Cellphone covers can also negatively affect your phone's ability to maintain a signal. Again, this doesn't usually affect your phone, but it will now. Every cover does not affect your phone's signal, so just try it out and see if you notice a difference. Hopefully, there's no difference, and you can put your cover back on to protect your phone. If not, you may want to consider placing some carpets around, just in case you drop your phone.

The Wi-Fi Solution

If you can't get a reliable cellphone signal in your basement, then another option you have is WiFi calling. All newer phones are equipped with this technology as long as you have broadband at home. The internet signal is usually strong enough to work in your basement, so if you have broadband, use wi-fi calling. This isn't super reliable, but it's a lot better than nothing at all. You can also use messaging apps that allow you to connect with others through video calls.

Be sure to consider creating a signal map, which is a map that tells you where the cellphone signal is strongest in your basement to help you remember where to stand to make calls. Hopefully, some of these solutions work so that you can make all the calls you need from your basement.
